Cunningham Gulch ↔ Rio Grande headwaters · 12,588′ · Challenging 4WD. Typically open June 25 to October 15.

Climbs brutally steep grades out of Cunningham Gulch to cross the Continental Divide, then wanders down the infant Rio Grande toward Creede. Remote, lightly traveled, and one of the last in the area to melt out. The Colorado Trail and CDT cross at the summit.

History & lore

  • Before the railroad reached Silverton in 1882, all freight came over Stony Pass by wagon and burro.
